Schnauzer

low dander dog picture

The Schnauzer is compact and easy to take on adventures. This breed is not good in apartments because they may bark if bored. Your Schnauzer can be a good watchdog.

Schnauzers are usually sociable and often good with other pets. However, this breed has a deep chasing instinct, so he may not do well in a home with cats, gerbils, guinea pigs or other small animals. Be careful on walks – your Schnauzer may bolt if he sees something interesting to chase.

Training

Your Schnauzer should be trained early to socialize or he may become upset and bark at strangers regularly. This breed can be stubborn, so be consistent with your positive training. The Schnauzer is intelligent and should be taught tricks that will provide mental stimulation.

Exercise

Schnauzers require a good amount of daily exercise. They are used to chasing, and should be able to run and play daily to fulfill this need.

Grooming

The Schnauzer needs to be groomed to keep his coat healthy. He is a low shedder with a wirey coat that should be brushed and trimmed regularly.

Health

Schnauzers need daily exercise and mental stimulation.

What aboput a Schnauzer for an asthmatic family?

The Schnauzer is considered to be a good dog for those with allergies. The coat is similar to hair rather than “fur.” The Miniature Schnauzer is probably a better choice than the full size. If you have allergies/asthma in the house, keep your Schnauzer’s fur groomed short. If left long, a Schnauzer’s fur will come out like hair.

If you have allergies in the house, call a local Schnauzer breeder and ask if you can visit the puppies/dogs a few times. Let the asthmatic family member pet and play with the dog, smell it, etc. This will help to tell if the dog’s coat will set off an asthma attack or begin symptoms. I suggest doing this several times, and talking with your doctor as well. Good luck!

I have a schnauzer I got for Xmas last year….My mom thought she was a Scottie. When I first saw her I was dissapointed because I wanted a small little puppy but as soon as she jumped on my lap and gave me a kiss I was in love..
AND STILL AM! I love my Emmy. Her name is Emily and she is all white and really the best dog I have ever had. She is SUPER smart and just a love bug. Her previous, previous (lol!) owners kept her in a cage all the time and were just bad parents….couldn’t tell that now! She’s a sweetie…Does chase my cat though!
