Dalmatians are sweet, loving dogs who range from fly ball experts to couch
potatoes - with everything else in between. They are wonderful with
children and are very good family dogs. And
if you are lucky, your Dalmatian just may treat you to the famous
"'Dalmatian Smile!"
Dalmatians are the only dogs who have
the facial muscles that allow a dog to smile. A Dalmatian smile can look
like a cross between a grin and a snarl. I've seen my own Dalmatian smile when she has been
caught sneaking in the trash or trying to get something off the table. Or
sometimes my children will gently trace a finger down her muzzle to be
rewarded with a smile that sends them into hysterics.
Many Dalmatians will smile when they are
excited and some Dalmatians will smile when they are nervous.
Unfortunately, if they are in a pound and smile because they are frightened,
it can be interpreted as savage - when in fact it is simply a sweet, loving
Dalmatian who is scared and wants to go home. All she can do is sit there
and show a big toothy grin, which to a stranger, looks like she is
snarling. A Dalmatian Smile is simply that - a big toothy grin with nothing
aggressive about it. Enjoy the pictures!

Randi smiles when she smells smoke. Here she is on the deck at a
