The Dachshund is a scent
hound, originally bred for hunting badger. They are courageous and
tough, but love to be close and cuddled. If you are not around, your
dog may snuggle into a handy pillow or blanket. The Dachshund likes to
entertain and enjoys playing with the people they love. This breed is
not generally good with small children. Some dachshunds show up at the
pound as strays because they burrowed under their fence and behaved like a
"scent hound," becoming lost. Be sure your dog cannot get under the
fence, and do not let him out of an unsecure yard without a leash. Dachshunds enjoy the company of another dog that is a suitable size for their small frames. Some dachshunds have been known to bark a lot.
Training
Potty training your puppy may be initially difficult. This dog has a stubborn, no-nonsense personality. Since dachshund's want to be with you astll the time, some may have to be trained not to chew things up if suffering from separation anxiety. Socialize your puppy so he will not be snappy to strangers as he grows.

Exercise
The Dachshund loves to play with squeaky toys and balls. Dachshunds do not require as much exercise as some larger breeds, so they make nice apartment dogs.
Grooming
This is a short-haired dog that does not shed very much.
Health
The Dachshund can suffer from disc disease and disc injuries which may result in paralysis. Do not let your dog jump from high places. If your dog hurts his back, you may be in for some hefty vet fees, so consider pet health insurance. Dachshunds are also prone to teeth and gum problems.
