The Scottish Terrier is stubborn and strong willed. He is a little dog that is robust and a good watchdog. This breed is dignified and self-assured. The Scottie is often referred to as the “thinking dog,” with eyes that seem to have wisdom beyond what you can understand. He prefers to be your peer rather than just your “dog.”

These dogs have been used to “kill vermin,” and are prone to chase after small animals. They may not work well with a cat and will definitely chase after a lost hamster or gerbil. He may nip if bothered, so this breed may not be suitable around small children. The Scottish Terrier may feel territorial around a dog of the same sex.

Training

This breed has a strong will, and may be a bit difficult to housetrain. If you are on a walk and your Scottish Terrier spots something small running, it is possible he will chase after it until he catches it.

Exercise

This breed does not require a great deal of exercise and will do well in an apartment.

Grooming

The Scottish Terrier has a moderate coat that requires trimming every few months. Brush regularly to keep it from matting.

Health

The Scottish Terrier is prone to allergies, skin problems, bleeding, joint and autoimmune disorders.

This breed has a strong will and is very stubborn. He is dignified and is a good watchdog.

The Lhasa Apso is wary of strangers, and does not appreciate being scolded by anyone. This is not a good dog for young children. If the Lhasa Apso has his fur pulled or is toppled on, he may snap at the child. He will play with you, but will remain dignified during the game.

This breed does not require a great deal of exercise, and has a beautiful long coat of fur.

Training

As one of the more strong willed dog breeds, the Lhasa Apso is difficult to housetrain. Plan on working with this puppy for up to six months on housetraining.

Grooming

Health

The pug is cute in an “only a mother could love” kind of way. The pug is playful, stable, dependable, calm and good natured. This dog instinctively seems to know when it will benefit him to act mature, and when to act sweet or silly. Pugs are black and fawn, with a rare color not often found of silver.

Training

The pug is stubborn, and may take up to six months to housetrain. You may also find him stubborn as you attempt to train him in other ways as well.

Exercise

The pug does not require a lot of exercise. As a matter of fact, breathing difficulties may keep him from exercising for long periods of time.

Grooming

The pug is a heavy shedder. Daily brushing outside will help to keep the hair down in your house.

Health

It is unfortunate that this dog has been bred to almost distorted proportions. This causes many health problems, the worst being breathing. If it is hot or muggy outside, you will probably need to keep your pug indoors. The breed is at risk of heat stroke in the hot weather. Due to the pug’s protruding eyes, always protect his eyes in wind and near other potential eye hazards. Due to breathing difficulties, your pug may also be at risk when being anesthetized.

Friendly, good with children and loyal. These three words describe the bulldog. The Bulldog is a nice family pet and does well in an apartment. He is loyal and does not fear anything – as a matter of fact, there are stories in which bulldogs have saved their owners’ lives.

Your bulldog loves attention, and is happiest when you are giving it to him. A bulldog might not be happy if he is alone all day and does not get lots of attention in the evening. He is an excellent watchdog, but remember he may want to scrap with unknown dogs near you. The bulldog is a friendly, good and loyal family pet.

The bulldog has a healthy amount of flatulence, and will drool as well as snore and grunt. He is not suitable for extreme temperatures of both hot and cold. The bulldog has a short face and may have breathing problems if worked too hard or left in heat or cold.

Training

Potty training will be fine with the bulldog. Be patient and he will try to please you.

Exercise

The Bulldog does not require a lot of exercise. He will be active when young but will grow out after a few years. This breed will be fine in an apartment, but will enjoy a daily walk.

Grooming

This breed does not require a great deal of grooming. The Bulldog is a moderate shedder. A nice weekly brushing will suffice.

Health

The Bulldog can have breathing problems due to the shape of his head and his small windpipe. He is susceptible to skin infections and may have poor eyesight. The bulldog can also suffer from hip dysplasia.

Yorkshire Terrier

The Yorkshire Terrier is a spunky little fellow, averaging between 3 to 7 pounds. He loves to run about investigating things, but loves a lap just as much. If the Yorkshire Terrier owner wants a clingy lapdog, the Yorkshire Terrier is suitable for the job. On the other hand, if an owner treats his Yorkie as a spunky, more independent dog, he can easily fit the part.

This dog is small and may do well in an apartment, but should be trained from a puppy not to bark excessively. The Yorkie tends to have a high, shrill bark and will announce strangers with plenty of it.

Your Yorkie is probably good with older children, but may become nervous at roughhousing younger kids. He loves to sit on laps and be pampered, but also enjoys scampering about. Be careful on walks – your Yorkie may be scrappy and try to show a bigger dog who is boss – which may lead to getting himself hurt! Your Yorkie may also be possessive of his own toys and food.

Training

Train your Yorkshire Terrier early not to bark. You should also pay close attention to leash training. Your Yorkie will probably dart back and forth on the leash, so keep hiim away from busy streets. The Yorkie is known for difficult potty training. Furthermore, if there is bad weather, don’t count on your Yorkie running out to go potty. Some owners prefer to keep a litter box indoors for the reluctant Yorkie.

Exercise

The Yorkie does not require a great amount of exercise. He is happy to just trot around the house inspecting things. Every dog should be taken out daily for fresh air.

Grooming

The Yorkshire Terrier does not shed a great deal, but does require brushing at least every other day. His coat is soft and shiny but long. You may wish to trim the bottom of your Yorkie’s coat so it won’t drag on the ground trapping mud and dirt.

Health

Bad teeth can run in some Yorkie lines. They are prone to allergies and liver shunt, and can easily react to foods, anesthetics, vaccines and strong chemicals. Talk to your vet about the dangers of sedating a Yorkie. Your Yorkshire Terrier does not like extreme heat or cold and should be protected from both. This small dog should be protected from falls and from being stepped on.

He has a large head with round, dark eyes that can melt your heart. The Pekingese also has medium feathery fur, with an extra bit around the neck that slightly resembles a lion.

Your Pekingese loves to be with family. He will happily be your lapdog, and loves it when everyone is home to play. In addition to being most happy with his owners, the Pekingese also has an independent streak, which should be recognized and respected by his family.

Your Pekingese can be a good watchdog, but is normally content and calm. He does not require a great deal of exercise, and therefore makes a nice apartment dog. Your Pekingese will probably do well with strangers.

Training

The Pekingese loves family, but can also have a bit of independence in her or him. This may result in a bit of stubbornness. If you are able to gain the trust and love of your Pekingese, he will enjoy pleasing you by responding to your training.

Exercise

The Pekingese is prone to dental problems. Be sure to have her teeth cleaned by your veterinarian as needed. If tartar is allowed to accumulate, your Pekingese may lose permanent teeth. Your Pekingese will snore and snuff, and may also have flatulence. This breed has respiratory problems due to the face shape, and can have joint, back and eye problems. They are playful and affectionate. These dogs do not do well without companionship. These dogs love the family, but may bond strongly to one person. Personalities range from rather serious to fun-loving and silly. French Bulldogs make many noises, such as grunting, snoring and snuffling. They may also slobber a good deal.

Training

French Bulldogs are willful and require patient and consistent training. They are often difficult to housetrain.

Exercise

The French Bulldog will make a good apartment dog. He does not bark much, and does not require a lot of exercise.

Grooming

Although this is a short-haired dog, his hair will stick firmly to furniture and carpets when shedding.

Health

Due to his large round eyes, the French Bulldog is prone to eye injury. Be sure to protect his eyes on windy days and in similar situations. The French Bulldog is known for great flatulence, so feeding him the proper, healthy food is a must.

Please spay or neuter your English Bulldog. Females often require c-sections due to the size of the puppy heads.

Hot weather, particularly humid, will bother your French Bulldog. He will have breathing problems, so please keep him inside on stifling, hot days. He may also suffer later in life from joint diseases, heart defects or spinal disorders.
