airedale terrier

Courageous, agile, smart and loyal, mixed in with a good dose of stubbornness and a sense of humor. These words are often used to describe the Airedale Terrier. The Airedale Terrier is an enthusiastic dog that is good with children and protective of his family. This dog loves to run outside, dig and play in the garden. He needs plenty of space to run, roll and get dirty. The Airedale Terrier does not shed, so he may be a good candidate for people who are prone to dog allergies.

The Airedale Terrier is the largest terrier, often called the “King of Terriers,” and grow to be 50 to 70 pounds. Originally from Airedale in Yorkshire England, this breed was used to hunt otters.

Training

The Airedale Terrier is very smart, but stubborn. This dog will respond well to consistent and gentle training. He is especially happy to perform for positive rewards. Once trained, this dog can be an amazing competitor in retrieving, agility and more.

Being an intelligent dog, the Airedale Terrier should be trained to perform tricks that are a challenge. Your Airedale will not enjoy performing silly tricks, but would rather perform challenging and competitive tasks.

Exercise

The Airedale Terrier needs lots of daily exercise, and should never be kept indoors all day. This breed requires a large yard with lots of time to run.

Grooming

The Airedale Terrier has a broken coat, meaning he has a harsh wire top coat and a soft undercoat of fur. This dog should be groomed daily with a serrated edged comb, found in local pet stores. If you clip your Airedale, he will become more prone to skin allergies.

Health

The Airedale Terrier has excellent eyesight and hearing. This breed is prone to hip dysplasia, allergies and dermatitis. Do not feed your young Airedale puppy food for a long period of time. This additional amount of protein may cause hip dysplasia later in life.
