African Clawed Frog

Seen in plastic water habitats at gift shops, or in tanks at the pet store, African Clawed Frogs are a surprisingly fun pet to have! These frogs are aquatic, with four long fingers and hind legs that have five toes. They will change color to match their background, with males being smaller with dark pads on the undersides of their hands and forearms.

Each frog requires at least a gallon of water, which must not be deeper than twelve inches. It is extremely important to completely cover the top of the container. Frogs are little escape artists, and will jump or wriggle out of the smallest of spaces. Unfortunately, these escapes often end in a sad death.

Containers do not require filtration, and should be cleaned twice a week. Tap water is fine to use as long as you let it sit for a day before using. It is a good idea to change the water the day after you have fed your frog. Your frog should have some type of place to hide in his home. Plants are not required, but are nice to look at and will provide oxygen for your frog.

Your frog should be fed once a day. If he does not eat all his food within 15 minutes, feed him a little less the next day. You can purchase African Clawed Frog food at most large pet stores. If you are not able to find this specific food, turtle food should work well until you can find the correct diet for your frog.

African Clawed Frogs are often kept in tanks with fish in pet stores. It is possible for your frog to live happily in a fish tank, provided the fish are small enough to not be deemed as predators. The frog will need a corner where the water does not flow heavily, with an object to hide in if he needs quiet time. Be sure there is no way for your frog to jump or wiggle out of the tank if you plan to keep him with fish.

You may find your frog has what looks like peeling skin coming off of his body. This is a normal shed, and demonstrates a healthy frog. You do not need to do anything but let nature take it’s course.

The African Clawed Frog is amusing to watch, and you will probably find he has a personality all to himself!
